San Francisco Frontiers - Wandrd Launches Magnetic Camera Strap System to Simplify Gear Attachment

Wandrd, a manufacturer known primarily for its photography bags, has introduced the Magnetic Camera Strap system, a new accessory designed to replace traditional mechanical quick-release mechanisms with magnet-based connectivity. The launch marks a significant shift in how photographers attach gear to their bodies, aiming to reduce friction during rapid transitions between shooting modes.

The company unveiled the system on Thursday, positioning it as an evolution of the quick-attach standards established over a decade ago by Peak Design. That earlier innovation, known as Anchor Links, utilized small circular nubs left attached to camera eyelets to facilitate easy strap swapping. While that mechanism became the de facto industry standard and inspired numerous competitors, Wandrd cofounder Ryan Cope stated that the new magnetic approach addresses lingering inefficiencies in connection speed and security.

"We're photographers ourselves, so we're constantly ideating, tinkering, thinking of ways that things can be better," Cope told WIRED. "A camera strap like this has been at the back of our minds for a while."

The core of Wandrd’s system consists of circular anchors called Torus Links. These components attach to the standard eyelets on a camera body and are rated to support up to 198 pounds. The design includes a visual wear-indicator system: if the black fabric covering the anchor begins to fray, yellow material becomes visible, signaling that replacement is needed soon. If the underlying material turns red, users are instructed to stop using the link immediately. Wandrd provides a two-year warranty for the Torus Links.

Unlike the solid nubs used by Peak Design, Wandrd’s Torus Links resemble donuts with a central hole. The strap ends feature a mechanism called CoreLock, which contains embedded magnets. When brought near the Torus Link, these magnets guide the connector into place, pinching into the anchor’s hole to secure the camera. This magnetic guidance is intended to make one-handed operation smoother, particularly in awkward shooting positions.

However, the connection is not entirely passive. To detach the strap, users must still engage a dual-pinch mechanism on the CoreLock. This design choice ensures that the strap remains securely attached during vigorous movement and cannot be accidentally pulled off like some magnetic phone accessories. The system prioritizes security alongside speed, preventing unintended disconnection while maintaining the ease of magnetic alignment.

In practical testing, the magnetic system demonstrated significant advantages in field conditions. During a recent press briefing involving product photography, the ability to quickly lower a camera for low-angle shots and reattach it instantly proved valuable. The magnetic guidance allowed for rapid re-engagement without the need for precise manual alignment, reducing the cognitive load associated with managing gear during active shoots.

Cope emphasized the utility of magnets in guiding components into place, noting that they offer both security and simplicity. "I love the simplicity they create—guiding things into place," he said. "You don't always have a place to put your camera down; I like that magnets help guide them and are a lot more secure, and they're also just fun."

The system supports multiple configurations, including a single-point sling setup. By clipping one end of the strap directly into a built-in Torus Loop on the buckle, users can create a closed loop worn across the torso. This leaves only one magnetic connector to attach to the camera, allowing for quick detachment while keeping the strap securely in place on the body.

Comfort and material durability were central to the two-year development process. Wandrd utilized a custom "liquid nylon" tubular webbing designed to be softer along the edges to prevent neck strain during extended wear. The absence of metal components throughout the strap system is intended to prevent scratching camera bodies or lenses, a common issue with traditional hardware-based straps.

Wandrd also offers flexibility for users who prefer existing straps. A DIY kit priced at $29 allows photographers to attach the Magnetic CoreLock system to the ends of their current straps, including leather or other specialty designs. The complete strap kits are available in three sizes: a 30-mm standard version for $69, a 15-mm "Lite" version for $49, and a wrist strap option for $39.

While it remains uncertain whether Wandrd’s magnetic system will achieve the same widespread adoption as Peak Design’s Anchor Links, early user feedback suggests strong potential. The integration of magnets aims to solve specific pain points in camera handling, offering a faster, more intuitive connection method that reduces the physical and mental effort required to manage photography gear.
