Union Berlin President and CEO Demand Playing Time for U19 Star Linus Güther
Union Berlin president Dirk Zingler and CEO Horst Heldt are pressing for increased first-team opportunities for 16-year-old forward Linus Güther. Despite a standout record in the U19 squad, the teenager has seen minimal action with the senior side as the club’s attack remains stagnant.
Union Berlin president Dirk Zingler and CEO Horst Heldt have publicly advocated for greater first-team integration of 16-year-old forward Linus Güther, highlighting a disconnect between the club’s youth development success and its senior squad utilization.
The call for accountability comes as Union Berlin’s offense struggles significantly. The team has scored only seven goals in their first eight Bundesliga matches, prompting internal scrutiny over roster decisions. Despite this offensive drought, Güther was excluded from the matchday squad for a recent 1-1 draw against Cologne and has accumulated just one minute of senior playing time this season.
Güther’s case is anchored by his dominant performance in the U19 league. In five matches, he has recorded six goals and four assists. During a recent 2-0 victory over Babelsberg, which Zingler and Heldt attended to observe closely, Güther assisted Yann Megaptche’s opening goal and scored the second himself. He also captained the team for the first time.
While physical development remains a factor, with defenders in the Bundesliga being notably more robust than those in youth leagues, club leadership argues that performance metrics justify immediate consideration. Zingler and Heldt view Güther as one of the club’s most significant talents and believe his current role in the senior setup is insufficient.
The final decision rests with head coach Mauro Lustrinelli. However, the situation carries tangible risk for the club. Interest from multiple top-tier European clubs remains strong, and continued exclusion could prompt other teams to intervene. Güther’s potential debut against Freiburg may signal whether he will break into the first team or if his departure becomes inevitable.
